ex nihilo

Your picture, as LEDs

Drop a wallpaper here, paste it or give its address, and see it the way NIHIL draws its own: every cell of the screen an LED, lit by the picture underneath. It is drawn in this page, and a picture you drop or paste goes nowhere.

Screen Dots

No picture yet.

How it's drawn

The same steps as the desktop's wallpapers (theme/dotmatrix.py) and the phone's studio, with the same numbers.

One LED per cell

The picture is cut to the exact size of the screen, so every LED lands on whole pixels, and split into cells of 9 px. The light of each cell sets how big and how bright its LED is; the unlit ones stay faintly visible.

The night stays off

The black point is raised: a dark sky stays dark instead of turning into a field of dim dots, and the brightest parts reach full white.

Stars stay

A single bright point lights its cell even when the cell around it is dark, so a star in the photo is a star on the screen.

Make it your wallpaper

On NIHIL, give the system the original picture, not this render: it draws it the same way for every screen, at each one's own size.

  1. Put the picture in your machine's wallpapers

    sudo mkdir -p /etc/nixos/wallpapers
    sudo cp ~/Downloads/night.jpg /etc/nixos/wallpapers/
  2. Rebuild, then pick it

    nihil rebuild
    nihil-wallpaper set night
  3. Anywhere else

The PNG from this page is the wallpaper as it is, at the size you chose. On a phone, NIHIL for Android has its own studio.
